Music Wednesday - James Vincent McMorrow.
Hats off to RW, our favorite indie musician source, for finding/discovering yet another artist to know and become obsessed with.
James Vincent McMorrow is an Irish singer songwriter who wrote and created his newest album, EARLY IN THE MORNING by secluding himself in a beach dwelling on the Irish coast until he had what he deemed the right type of release. Easily compared to the likes of Bon Iver and Ray LaMontagne; James is set to take the US by storm.
So take a listen and let us know what you think? Who are some of your new favorites??

Grapefruit Macaroons - DIY
We were perusing through Pinterest and stumbled upon these amazing pictures by Lulu's Sweet Secrets, of macaroons. (which happen to be one of our favorite delicacies) We immediately decided if not now, when to trying to bake them for ourselves. It's a weekend project and we will definitely let you know how it goes.
Any tried and true dessert recipes you care to share??

Ingredients for the shells
(from the book Miette)
(makes eighteen 1-inch sandwich cookies)
1 1/2 cups (7 1/2 ounces) whole almonds - I used blanched almonds
2 1/4 cups (10 ounces) powdered sugar
3 large egg whites
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon finely grated grapefruit zest
1 teaspoon finely grated grapefruit zest
Preparation
Line
two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Using a 1 1/2-inch bottle
cap as a template, draw 1-inch circles in rows on the paper, about 1
inch apart. You should have room for eighteen circles on each sheet.
Place
half of the almonds and half of the powdered sugar in a food processor.
Process for 30 seconds, until the almonds are finely ground. Pour the
mixture into a separate bowl, and repeat the process with
the remaining almonds and powdered sugar. Sift or strain through a
sieve to remove any lumps. Set aside.
In
the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the
egg whites and cream of tartar and whisk on high speed until very stiff
peaks form, 3 to 4 minutes.
Using
a rubber spatula, gently fold about one-third of the almond mixture
into the egg whites. Fold in the remaining mixture in two more
additions, just until the ingredients are completely combined.
Fit
a pastry bag with a medium (1/2- or 5/8-inch) round tip and fill the
bag with the meringue. Pull up the cuff and twist it to seal and tighten
the meringue down into the cone. Purge the bag of air bubbles by
squeezing the bag. Keep the bag tightly twisted so that meringue doesn't
come back up on your hands. Using the template as a guide, pipe 1-inch
circles, 1/2 to 3/4 inch high, onto the baking sheets. Set the room
temperature for 2 hours. this allows the macaroons to develop their
distinctive crust and a "foot"or base on the bottom.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
Bake
the macaroons until set but not browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer the
baking sheets to wire racks and let the macaroons cool completely on the
pans. When they are cool, use your fingers to carefully lift half of the
cookies from the parchment and turn them upside down. Using a pastry
bag fitted a medium (1/2- or 5/8-inch) round tip and filled with either
the grapefruit butter cream, squeeze a nickle-size dollop of filling onto
each of the upside-down cookies, and then top with the remaining
macaroons to complete the sandwich cookies.
Store the macaroons, refrigerated, in airtight containers for up to 2 weeks. Serve at room temperature.
Grapefruit Butter cream
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoon freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
2 teaspoon grated grapefruit zest
In
a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter, sugar
and milk until smooth and creamy. Add the vanilla, grapefruit juice and
zest. Stir until well combined and smooth.

Eating in New York
I just took a trip out to New York for work, and as usual I was ecstatic to return to my former residence and my favorite city. As previously mentioned, one of my favorite things to do is to go out and eat, so I had to share my go-to list* with all of you!
1. Shake Shack - I cannot rave enough about this place. Go to Madison Square Park for the full experience, but if you want to get straight to the food they've opened up a number of other locations around town where you won't have to wait an hour. Their burgers use fresh quality ingredients and is really the best tasting burger. (Yes, I think it's better than In N Out!) Make sure to get a concrete as well, it's a mix of their frozen custard and seasonal toppings. If I could eat here every day, I would!
2. Minetta Tavern - Make a reservation or get there early and sit at the bar. Order a Tom Collins and the Bone Marrow and you're off to a great start to your night! One of my favorite and tastiest restaurants around town!
3. Momofuku Milk Bar - Three words: Blueberry & Cream Cookie! You really can't go wrong with anything at the Milk Bar. I like Momofuku as much as the next person, but the Milk Bar is what I dream about back home in California. If anyone wants to mail me a box of Blueberry & Cream and Cornflake cookies, I'd be so grateful!
4. Baohaus - I just can't get enough of their baos! The Chairman Bao stays true to the Taiwanese classic, and the others are so playful and inventive, and most importantly delicious! I always make a point to stop by their shop when I'm in town.
5. Laudree - A little taste of Paris available in New York! You can't get a better tasting macaron out there. My only regret is not having time to make it up the to the Upper East Side during my last trip to get a box! Pistachio is my personal favorite flavor.
Where are your must eat places in New York?

Seychelles Dream Closet Vol. 4: Hannah Metz
Hannah Metz is everyone's girl crush. When you first meet her, it's hard not to be intimidated by her talent, beauty and creativity, but she soon reveals her goofy side, and the intimidation slips away as she keeps you laughing for hours. Hannah is one half of The Loved One, a company she started with her partner Elvia Lahman. The two ladies run a vintage shop in Padasena and also design a line of original, vintage-inspired lingerie. We visited Hannah in the Brooklyn apartment she shares with her husband, artist Landon Metz, and their two cats. Take a peek at Hannah's favorite vintage finds and get her insider tips on vintage shopping.

femme du jour: Tina Chow
This week we're enamored with the style of the one and only Tina Chow. Tina Chow was a model and style icon during the 1980s. A member of the NYC elite, she was close friends with Andy Warhol, Manolo Blahnik and Jean Michel Basquiat. Tina was born Bettina Louise Lutz, daughter of a German father and Japanese mother. In 1972, she married Michael Chow, owner of the Mr. Chow restaurant chain. She and Michael were among NYC's biggest celebrities, andwhere she rubbed elbows with many artists and creatives. Tragically, Tina died in 1992 at the age of 41. Tina's grace and completely original look continue to inspire us.

New music for your Monday
If you're like us, Fiona Apple played a seminal role in your teenage years. How many nights spent lying on the bedroom floor listening to Tidal on repeat and wallowing in our very first heartache. It's been a long 7 years since Fiona's last album came out, and just when we were giving up hope, rumors started circulating that she was recording new songs, and then she was the talk of the festival at this years SXSW. Her new album, The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, is being released June 19, but in the meantime we can listen to the first single, "Every Single Night," right here.

Music Friday - Diane Birch
Another great songstress to send you off on a fabulous weekend adventure. Diane Birch, is as interesting as her songs. Channeling old world glamour, with nuances of hit makers from decades long gone, she's original and a very refreshing addition to today's music scene.
Here's an excerpt of her bio -
"Singer-songwriter Diane Birch took half her lifetime, and traveled
across the globe, to get to America, where she literally found her voice
and made her remarkable debut, Bible Belt. Though only in her
mid-twenties, Birch likes to think of herself as an “old soul,” and
indeed there is a startling maturity in her singing and a veteran’s
self-assurance in her writing. Hook-driven songs like “Fools” and
“Valentino” offer more than just instant gratification: they’re like
your new best friends – you’ll want to get together with them as
frequently as possible. Birch mixes piano-playing virtuosity with
easy-going soul, and she can strike an uplifting groove on even the most
melancholy tune. Her work bears hints of Laura Nyro (when she was
hanging out with LaBelle) and early 70’s Karen Carpenter (when she was
ruling the charts), while effortlessly incorporating New Orleans
second-line rhythms, gospel fervor, doo-wop harmonies, country-blues
guitar and classic AM radio-style melodies."
Listen to Bible Belt one time through and you're hooked. Let us know what you think?
